NEW AND NOTEWORTHY:

NFL SEASON ON THE LINE: JUDGE ENCOURAGES MEDIATION
(FindLaw's Tarnished Twenty) - Unfortunately the NFL season is still in limbo. This past Wednesday, Judge Susan Nelson failed to rule on an injunction that would end the NFL lockout, instead requesting a few weeks to more closely consider the issues. Despite the delay, both the players and owners have expressed their desire to get back to mediation. It may have something to do with Judge Nelson and her reputation.

KOBE BRYANT FINED $100,000 FOR GAY SLUR
(AP) - Kobe Bryant has been fined $100,000 by the NBA for using a derogatory gay term in frustration over a referee's call. NBA Commissioner David Stern announced the disciplinary action Wednesday, saying the distasteful term used by Bryant should never be tolerated. The five-time NBA champion guard cursed and used a common homophobic slur when referee Bennie Adams called a technical foul on him Tuesday night in the third quarter of Los Angeles' win over the Spurs. He also punched a chair and threw a towel during the outburst.http://news.lp.findlaw.com/ap/s/2030/04-13-2011/20110413152002_138.html?DCMP=NWL-cons_sportslaw

(AP) - New York Giants owner John Mara has gone from alternate to the first seat on a jury at a trial in federal court in Manhattan. Mara became Juror No. 1 on Thursday in the second week of a major international drug case. He was elevated after another juror got sick from possible food poisoning. It was unclear if Mara might become jury foreman.

SPANISH OCTOPUS ORACLE TESTED BY MADRID-BARCELONA
(AP) - A Spanish zoo is trying to find its own successor to Paul the Octopus, whose predictions were a highlight of last year's World Cup. Two tentacled tipsters were tasked with predicting the outcome of Saturday's Spanish league match between Barcelona and Real Madrid.

FIESTA BOWL TO SEEK REIMBURSEMENT FROM LAWMAKERS
(AP) - Arizona legislators who took cross-country trips and accepted free game tickets from the Fiesta Bowl soon will get reimbursement invoices. Bowl attorneys say they're conducting an investigation to determine the Fiesta's total outlay on lawmaker gifts and travel so they can seek reimbursement for those expenses.

(AP) - Boxer Rola El-Halabi was shot by her stepfather and former manager before a title fight, giving her injuries that are not life-threatening but could imperil her career. The undefeated 25-year-old German was preparing to fight Irma Balijagic Adler of Bosnia for the vacant IBF lightweight title Friday night when her 44-year-old stepfather entered her dressing room and shot her in the hand, knee and feet.

DUKE LACROSSE RAPE ACCUSER FACES MORE CHARGES
(AP) - A man who police say was stabbed by a woman who falsely accused Duke lacrosse players of rape has died. Durham Police Chief Jose Lopez Jr. told The Herald-Sun of Durham on Wednesday that 46-year-old Reginald Daye had died. According to WRAL and the newspaper, Daye had been taken to Duke University Hospital after being stabbed with a kitchen knife on April 3.

ARRESTING DEVELOPMENTS:

TITANS RECIEVER KENNY BRITT ARRESTED: TRIED TO OUTRUN POLICE
(FindLaw's Tarnished Twenty) - Being busted for marijuana possession isn't much more than a low-level misdemeanor in most of the country. But don't tell that to Tennessee Titans WR Kenny Britt--he's now being charged with three crimes--including a felony--after evading police to protect his marijuana-toting passenger. One would imagine it would make him feel stupid.

BARRY BONDS CONVICTED: GUILTY OF OBSTRUCTION OF JUSTICE
(FindLaw's Tarnished Twenty) - Is Barry Bonds guilty? Of what? That has been the hot question Wednesday after the jury came back with news of a verdict. After starting deliberations on Friday, the jury of 4 men and 8 women convicted Barry Bonds of obstruction of justice. They deadlocked on related charges of perjury. That means there could be a second Barry Bonds trial if the prosecutors want to retry him.

ALLEN IVERSON'S LAMBORGHINI IMPOUNDED: 'DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM?'
(FindLaw's Tarnished Twenty) - If you think only active sports stars have an attitude problem, think again. Ex-NBA bad boy Allen Iverson demonstrated last week that the notion of entitlement doesn't end with retirement. He spent twenty minutes throwing a self-indulgent hissy fit at a Georgia police when they impounded his Lamborghini. He's lucky he didn't get hauled in.
