Girl Power
WOMEN-OWNED BUSINESSES HAVE RISEN 50%
(FindLaw's Free Enterprise) - The American Express Co. OPEN State of Women-Owned Businesses Report is out, and there is some very good news for female entrepreneurs. The survey, which utilizes data collected every five years by the U.S. Census Bureau, reports that there are 8.1 million women-owned businesses in the United States--up 50% from its start date in 1997. Women-owned businesses also outperformed their male counterparts in all fields.

Under the Robe
DRUNK, NAKED JUDGE, WRAPPED IN BED SHEET, ARRESTED IN HOTEL
(FindLaw's Legally Weird) - Judges often look quite serious, wearing dark robes and wielding justice. But they don't always dispense justice. Sometimes the roles are reversed. Like when a drunken Pennsylvania judge, sans robe and gavel, was found naked and wrapped in a bed sheet in a Cumberland County hotel. Douglas Gummo, a magistrate judge in Huntingdon County, has charged with harassment, disorderly conduct and public drunkenness, WJAC-TV reports.

Who's to Blame?
TOYOTA WINS FIRST SUDDEN ACCELERATION TRIAL
(FindLaw's Injured) - Between 2009 and 2011, over 8 million Toyota vehicles were subject to sudden acceleration recalls, which the company attributed to floor mats becoming lodged in pedal wells and mechanical sticking. The first of the Toyota sudden acceleration lawsuits wrapped up last Friday when a federal jury in New York found that the accident was attributable to driver error--not a design defect.

GoDaddy CEO's Elephant Issue
VIDEO OF ELEPHANT SHOOTING TURNS INTO DONATIONS
(AP) - A video of an American CEO shooting an elephant in Zimbabwe that villagers then sliced apart for meat has raised thousands of dollars for Save The Elephants. GoDaddy.com chief executive Bob Parsons was part of a team that killed the elephant last month, and says shooting problem elephants helps save crops and feed villages.

CRIMINAL LAW - ARRESTING DEVELOPMENTS:

Witness-less
WHY BARRY BONDS DIDN'T CALL A SINGLE WITNESS
(FindLaw's Blotter) - A lot of people were surprised yesterday when Barry Bonds' perjury trial defense team rested its case without calling any witnesses. There's a lot of speculation as to why this decision was made--I even chimed in over on FindLaw.com's Tarnished Twenty, highlighting potential strategic rationales. But the fact of the matter is that the Barry Bonds trial is a criminal prosecution, placing the burden of proof on the prosecution. This means that if Barry Bonds' defense team didn't want to call any witnesses, it didn't have to.

Criminal Poking?
MOTLEY CRUE'S VINCE NEIL CHARGED WITH BATTERY
(FindLaw's Celebrity Justice) - Vince Neil has had an interesting career. First there was Motley Crue. Then there were race cars, followed by a less than stellar solo career. Again with Motley Crue. And then The Surreal Life. This last one ended in a marriage, by the way. We can now add criminal poker to the list. Oh yes, Vince Neil is being charged with battery after he allegedly poked three people, including ex-girlfriend Alicia Jacobs.

NYC SUIT: PARIS HILTON KEPT $60K IN BORROWED GEMS
(AP) - A break-in at Paris Hilton's Los Angeles home has led to a New York lawsuit over $60,000 in borrowed gems. A jeweler's insurer says the celebrity socialite simply held onto them after police gave them back to her. Insurer Allianz Global sued Hilton Wednesday. Her spokeswoman says Hilton's representatives haven't yet reviewed the suit and have no immediate response.
