FEATURED ARTICLES:

'DO NOT TRACK ME' BILL WOULD BLOCK INTERNET SPYING
(FindLaw's Technologist) - The Onion recently joked that Congress forgot how to pass a law, but to the contrary, "Do Not Track Me" legislation was introduced today by Rep. Jackie Speier. The bill is designed to allow consumers to block unwanted tracking of personal information online. The "Do Not Track Me" legislation is intended to be analogous to the "Do Not Call" list for telemarketing. The bill is supported by the nonprofit Consumer Watchdog as well as a number of consumer advocates. 80% of Americans support a Do Not Track option, according to Consumer Watchdog.

LINKEDIN HITS 100 MILLION USERS: NEW CLIENTS MAY AWAIT YOU
(FindLaw's Technologist) - A group of lawyers was recently talking about LinkedIn and the Facebook-like invitations for new "friends" they receive. Many attorneys said they ignored the invitations because they didn't know who they were. Seriously? LinkedIn, after all, is a professional networking site. Most attorneys who have a profile on LinkedIn are likely there to expand their network of professionals and potential clients.

LAW FIRM LIFEBOAT: WHAT TO DO IF YOUR FIRM IS ABOUT TO FOLD
(FindLaw's Greedy Associates) - Yet another BigLaw firm is going down. Howrey has announced plans to dissolve. Yoss LLP, one of South Florida's largest law firms, is also closing. Which brings up an interesting question: What should you do if you're at a firm that's about to go under? How will you know when things are on the brink? First, watch out if partners suddenly start leaving the firm or if rumors begin spreading that another firm is going to buy or rescue your firm.

FIVE WAYS TO CHANGE LEGAL CAREERS
(FindLaw's Strategist) - Are you thinking that your current career as an attorney is for the birds? If you wish you were doing something else, you're probably facing a dilemma due to the economy. It's a difficult time to try to change jobs, let alone to change legal careers. But that doesn't mean that you shouldn't go for it, if a change is what you really want. Professionals with legal training can offer a lot of utilities to all kinds of organizations. Further, waiting may not be a good option, as the economy could remain sluggish for a number of years to come.

WORKPLACE RETALIATION: COURT MAKES IT EASIER TO SUE EMPLOYERS
(FindLaw's Decided) - If you've ever complained about a legal violation to your employer, chances are that you feared (or experienced) workplace retaliation. But did you know that almost every employee protection law in this country bars employer retaliation should you file a complaint? Well they do, and those provisions may have just gotten easier to enforce.

TWITTER SETTLEMENT: SITE PROMISES TO INCREASE SECURITY
(FindLaw's Decided) - You'll never meet a Twitter user who doesn't simultaneously curse and chuckle when greeted with the iconic Fail Whale. But you'll also never meet a user who doesn't use the microblogging site to criticize Twitter itself. What does this mean? Tweeters can handle a little downtime, but when Twitter security is breached multiple times, as it was at the beginning of 2009, users are visibly up in arms. Or tweets.

WISCONSIN JUDGE MARYANN SUMI BLOCKS GOV. WALKER'S ANTI-UNION LAW
(FindLaw's Decided) - Judge Maryann Sumi issued a temporary restraining order today, blocking the Wisconsin anti-union law from coming into effect. The lawsuit, which comes on the heels of massive pro-labor protests and fleeing legislators, alleges that Republicans passed the Wisconsin anti-union law in violation of the state's open meeting laws. It is the importance of these laws that underlies Judge Sumi's decision.

BEWARE OF CLIENTS TRYING TO SCAM YOUR FIRM
(FindLaw's Strategist) - In this business, your professional reputation is your biggest asset. This rings especially true for small firms and solo practitioners who rely heavily on word of mouth. The thing is that there's always going to be that one client who calls your reputation into question--your services are somehow a scam. However, you can usually attribute this to a disappointing outcome (or a little crazy). But what if there really is a scam? And you're also one of its victims?
