TOP NEWS - RELEVANT HEARSAY: Clean Sweep? MARCH MADNESS: VASECTOMIES SPIKE 50% DURING NCAA TOURNAMENT (FindLaw's Legally Weird) - If you ask a man to get a vasectomy, you're likely to spend the night on the couch. But if you ask a man to get a vasectomy and promise him a weekend on the couch, you might just get somewhere. Now, now, we're not talking about ultimatums here. We here at Legally Weird don't condone forced sterilization. It's kind of illegal. But what we do condone is the March Madness Vasectomy. It's all the rage.
| Naming Huts MUTT V. RUTT: NEW JERSEY HOT DOG GIANT RUTT'S HUT SUES MUTT'S HUT (FindLaw's Legally Weird) - Rutt's Hut sues Mutt's Hut for...Okay, maybe turning that into a full-fledged tongue twister isn't so easy, but imagine the possibilities. Anyway, the hot dog scene in Clifton, New Jersey is about to get hut. Rutt's Hut, purveyor of the world's most disgustingly intriguing hot dog, has waged a not-so-culinary war against Mutt's. They stole Rutt's trademark, the hot dog giant says.
| Tip Threat CAN I BE SUED FOR TIP JARS AT MY BUSINESS? (FindLaw's Free Enterprise) - A Missouri Starbucks was sued over tip jars and has some business owners asking: Can my business be sued over having a tip jar on the counter? The short answer to the question of business liability may be rather disconcerting: yes. However, not to fret. You could also be sued for wearing an orange shirt, being an agent of Satan or any host of ridiculous reasons. The question isn't whether you can be sued for something, it's whether the opposing party is likely to prevail in such a suit.
| Taxed Out 'CRASH TAX' ON 911 CALLS ISN'T WORKING OUT (FindLaw's Injured) - What would make a car accident even worse? How about receiving a bill from the fire department, known as a "crash tax?" A number of cities have begun instituting such policies for responding to traffic accidents. The taxes are only instituted on out-of-town drivers and only if they are at fault. Cities in 26 states now have a crash tax, NPR reports...
| Got Fired AFLAC DUCK NO MORE: GILBERT GOTTFRIED FIRED OVER JAPAN JOKES (FindLaw's Celebrity Justice) - Comedy is largely a matter of timing. Comedian Gilbert Gottfried missed that memo, and wound up losing a cushy voiceover job because of a lack of sensitivities. Gottfriend, who was the voice of the Aflac duck, posted some off color jokes about the 8.9 magnitude Japan earthquake and tsunami on his Twitter account, Reuters reports. Gottfried's jokes included: "Japan is really advanced. They don't go to the beach. The beach comes to them."
| CRIMINAL LAW - ARRESTING DEVELOPMENTS: Busted Mid-Air FAKE AIR MARSHAL DETAINED BY ACTUAL AIR MARSHAL ABOARD PLANE (FindLaw's Legally Weird) - Even Frank Abagnale, Jr. of "Catch Me If You Can" had the good sense not to impersonate a police officer. But apparently a passenger detained on Wednesday lacked Abagnale's sensibilities, and was caught falsely identifying himself as a federal air marshal. The passenger was on Delta flight 1922, going from Detroit to Boston. An actual air marshal overheard the man and detained him, Transportation Security Administration officials said.
| LEGAL LITE: Utahn Whalehunters Beware DUMB LAWS: DUMBEST LAWS INVOLVING ANIMALS (FindLaw's Legal Grounds) - Whether you think the law is dumb or there are just dumb laws, you can't deny that legislation sometimes goes a bit too far. And no, I'm not talking about light bulbs. Not destroying the earth is good. Because dumb laws are plentiful in this little country of ours, it was difficult to choose just which laws to highlight. Seeing as how everyone loves a good animal story, our subservient (and sometimes not so subservient) friends seemed like a good choice.
